10 Tried-and-True Tips for Traveling Internationally with Kids: From One Parent to Another 🌍✈️

If there’s one thing I’ve learned as a parent and a lover of adventure, it’s that traveling with kids is a different ball game! It can feel daunting to think about long flights, unfamiliar places, and keeping little ones entertained (and tantrum-free). But trust me, with a little preparation and a lot of flexibility, international travel with kids can be one of the most rewarding experiences you'll ever have. Here are my top tips and tricks that have helped me and my family make the most of our adventures abroad. 😊

1. Plan Ahead but Stay Flexible

Planning is my best friend when it comes to family travel. I love researching family-friendly spots and finding cozy accommodations that feel like a home away from home. But here’s the secret sauce: flexibility. Kids don’t always stick to the plan (who knew, right?), so I always leave some room in the schedule for downtime or unexpected fun. That way, we can explore at our own pace and soak in all those spontaneous moments!

2. Pack Smart and Light 🎒

I’ll admit, I used to be a chronic over-packer. I wanted to be prepared for everything! But after a few trips of lugging around way too much, I learned to pare down. Now, I focus on packing versatile clothing that we can mix and match. And trust me, having a compact stroller and a favorite toy or blanket within easy reach can make all the difference during a long day of travel. Strollers, Carseat, bagpacks ... ensure that you know what your airlines will accommodate. I use this shoe rack to organize clothes.

3. Keep the Little Ones Entertained on the Plane ✈️

Ah, the dreaded long flight. Here’s what’s saved me: a well-packed carry-on full of goodies! Snacks, books, and coloring supplies. In-flight movies and shows with kid-friendly headphones can be helpful. I also bring a few surprise toys they’ve never seen before – the novelty can keep them occupied for hours! And don’t forget a portable charger to keep all those devices running smoothly.

4. Adjust to the New Time Zone with Ease 🕰️

Jet lag can be a beast, especially for little ones. Once we arrive, I try to get us all on the new local schedule right away and spend plenty of time outside in natural light – it really helps reset those internal clocks!

5. Snacks, Snacks, and More Snacks! 🍎

There’s no such thing as too many snacks when you’re traveling with kids. I always pack a variety of healthy options – granola bars, fruit, crackers – and plenty of water. A well-fed kiddo is a happy traveler, and staying hydrated is key, especially on long flights. Reusable water bottles are a must-have for refilling on the go! If you are still breastfeeding, that's a little different and I can write another blog post about that. Just remember to have breastmilk storage and a cooler. Here is a video with tips.

6. Keep Important Documents Close

Traveling internationally with kids means having all the right documents ready. Passports, visas, travel insurance, and any medical documents – I keep these all in a handy travel wallet, along with digital copies saved on my phone. It’s one less thing to worry about when I know everything is organized and easily accessible.

7. Get the Kids Excited by Involving Them in the Planning

Before we go, I love to show my kids pictures and videos of where we’re headed. Since Duna is old enough, we talk about all the fun things we’ll do and even let him help pack his little backpack with his favorite items. When they’re involved in the process, they’re more excited and engaged during the trip – and who doesn’t love an enthusiastic travel buddy?

8. Know the Local Emergency Numbers 🚑

One of the things I always do is research local emergency numbers for our destination and save them on my phone. I also write them down and keep them in my wallet, just in case.

9. Focus on Safety and Comfort

Comfort is key when traveling with kids. I dress them in layers for easy adjustments to different climates.

10. Roll with the Punches and Embrace the Adventure! 🌟

The most important tip I can share is to embrace the unexpected! Things don’t always go as planned, and that’s okay. Some of our best travel memories are from unplanned detours and little hiccups along the way. Staying calm and flexible, and having a sense of humor, makes all the difference. Remember, you’re making memories that will last a lifetime!

Final Thoughts

Traveling internationally with kids isn’t always easy, but it’s always worth it. The joy of exploring new places together, experiencing different cultures, and watching my kids’ eyes light up with wonder – it’s priceless. So pack those bags, keep an open mind, and get ready for the adventure of a lifetime!

Happy travels🌏💕
