I'm Done Apologizing for Simple Dinners
Confession: I used to feel guilty about what I fed my family.
Not guilty in a “we ate junk” way. Guilty in a “this wasn’t impressive enough” way. Like if dinner didn’t look like something from a cooking show, I had somehow failed at being a mom. Tacos three nights in a row? Don’t tell anyone. Pasta again? Clearly I needed to try harder.
Where did I even get that idea? Nobody at my table was complaining. My kids would happily eat the same five meals on rotation for the rest of their lives. My husband has never once asked for a garnish. The only person judging my dinners was me.
I’m learning to let simple be enough.
There’s a season for the elaborate Sunday dinners, and I love those. But most weeks? Most weeks I’m running a business, raising three kids, and trying to remember if I drank water today. Dinner needs to be doable, not dazzling.
So here’s what actually feeds us: breakfast for dinner. Sheet pan everything. A rotisserie chicken doing all the heavy lifting. Leftovers remixed into something new enough that nobody notices. A pot of something warm that makes the house smell like I have my life together, even when I don’t.
And you know what? “Give us today our daily bread.” (Matthew 6:11)
Daily bread. Not a five-course tasting menu. Just enough for today. There’s something in that for me: God never asked me to be impressive in my kitchen. He asked me to show up and feed my people. Some days that looks like a slow-cooked meal. Most days it looks like whatever I can get on the table between school pickup and bedtime.
The guilt is gone, mostly. I’m not saying I never have a moment where I see someone’s gorgeous meal prep reel and feel a little twinge. I’m saying I’m getting faster at reminding myself: fed is fed, and my family is happy.
What’s your go-to simple dinner? The one you could make in your sleep? I need new ideas, because we’re about one taco night away from a mutiny. (Kidding. Mostly.)
